JE: Do you have any thanks or credit to give for your success with discus? Any mentors or colleagues who you think deserve some kudos?

MW: I've learned a lot from a bunch of great people. The internet is a great source for information and a way to meet one another, I respect what the pioneers have done for the hobby and the creativity of the Asian breeders. But with out the support from my wife and family chasing my dreams would not be possible.

JE: What do you see as the future of discuskeeping? More/less people? Any cool ideas for strains?

MW: More and more people in North America are starting to keep and breed discus. The hobby here is growing because of the amount of information that's now available. Knowledge is being passed along and secrets are being shared. The discus is starting to lose the bad rap its had in the past as being difficult or hard to keep.

JE: Is it hard to remain a hobbyist while having to transition to businessman? Do you have any problems with the hobbyist mentality causing you to make poor business decisions?

MW: Sometime it is. There are days that I just wish I could sit back and enjoy a few show tanks. I tell people all the time be careful what you wish for. I'll be the first to admit I've made some mistakes and tried my best to correct them. A lot of folks want more bang for their buck and try to get the smallest fish possible. That's a thing of the past "show fish or no fish" lol .

JE: Is there any goal you have in terms of your breeding other than always looking for better quality. Cary said something about a solid purple fish. Do you have any specific attempts you are going to make?

MW: Purple would be cool. I think the solid whites "Snow Flake" has opened the door for a bunch of possibilities. White Leopards, Red Whites, Blue Whites... Who knows what's next. At this point I'm more interested in new blood and increasing the quality of our stock. Theirs plenty of time to be creative later.

JE: Can you think of anything I left out you would like to bring up - either personally or discus related?

MW: I'm often misunderstood. Just because I do this for a living it does not mean I'm in it for the money. I left a very good paying job to do something I love and enjoy. I am and always will be a hobbyist at heart. I'm here to help and will always try my best.
